Please say thank you to the sponsors that made the 2010 Shootouts possible.  They are listed here, and we encourage you to thank them with your business whenever possible.  A special thanks goes out to Sterling Volkswagen's Sterling Robertson for his assistance this weekend and for sponsoring Friday's Sterling Volkswagen's Dash-For-Cash.  The Dash was a fresh idea that started with a regular Dialing For Dollars round.  We then took the 8 best reaction times in Top and Mod plus the 4 best in Jr and Motorcycle and ran off each set for the cash.  Even the first round losers got spending money.
October 5 Update:  The Fall Shootout raised $719 for the Alliance for Women and Children.  Thanks to everyone for their participation and donations!

A. J. Enterprizes Top ET- Iron Man Final: Scott Ball (top) came up from San Antonio to run with us this weekend and certainly made the trip worth while.  Scott and Carol Johnson (bottom) had a really close final in Sunday's Top ET.  Scott went .007 on the tree and ran 4.94 on a 4.93 to take the win and advance to the Iron Man round.  Carol was right there with a .009 reaction and a 4.994 on a 4.98 dial but lost the finish line by a mere .006 seconds.  Saturday's Top winner Charlie Goff (middle) from Smithville earned his chance at the Iron Man by taking out Ty Casey (not shown) in Saturday's Top final.  Charlie got the better half of a double breakout run against Ty, with Charlie going only .0013 under the dial and Ty running.0065 under.  In the Iron Man final on Sunday, Scott owned the run at both ends, hitting a .014 light and running dead on 4.931 on a 4.93 dial for the win.  Charlie was a tad slower on the tree at .027 and maybe got there first by about .004, but he broke out by a bitty .007 with the clock showing 5.143 under a 5.15 dial. There were no hairs left to split after that round.
Pinnacle Countertop Solutions Modified ET - Iron Man Final: On sunday afternoon, Benny Gossett of San Angelo earned a "bye" into the Iron Man final by keeping both his tech cards all the way through Modified ET.  Chris Kelly got his shot at the Iron Man on Saturday when he won the Modified Final.  Chris took on Freddie Hillin in the Saturday final and it was over way too quick when Freddy went red on the tree.  To rub a little salt in that wound, Freddie ran a great dead on 6.784 on a 6.78 to Chris' under dial 8.12 on an 8.14. In the Iron Man final, Benny took control on the tree with a killer .001 light and a two over 5.97 on a 5.95 to win to Big Deal.  Chris hit a soft .053 light and ran a close 8.17 on a 8.16, but we all know close is only good in horseshoes and no good in drag racing.  Even dead on would not have made up for a .05 advantage on the tree.  These two met up in the 2007 Shootout with an NHRA Wally on the line, with a similar outcome thanks to a broken transmission in the Falcon.  Maybe next time!
Longmire Plumbing Jr. Dragster - Iron Man Final: Hanna Lisenbe has spent the last part of the 2010 season taking the Jr. Dragster class to the cleaners.  The 2010 Jr Dragster champ finished up her season just the way any racer would love, with a class win and an Iron Man win on top of that.  On Saturday, Hanna held on to both tech cards to the final, giving her the automatic win along with win and runner up money.  It was a different story on Sunday thanks to Drew Bracey.  Drew is no stranger to the Winner's Circle and the last rounds of the Jr class proved to be two good racers going for the gold.  If Hanna won the final, it was over and the Iron Man would be her's right then.  It was not going to be that easy.  The Sunday final was a no lift, double breakout round and Drew took the win with a 7.89 on a 7.91.  Hanna broke out worse, running farther under her dial at 9.29 on a 9.34.  A miss by .03 is as good as a mile around Abilene.  Drew's win brought the same two drivers back for the Iron Man runoff.  At the bottom of the tree, it was Hanna with a .055 reaction against Drew's .174.  Hanna used that advantage to stay on the good side of the dial, crossing the top with a 9.33 on a 9.28.  Drew tried to catch up, but ran 7.88 under a 7.90 giving the win to Hanna.
Max's Kawasaki Motorcycle: Two Abilene regulars made up the race for the Motorcycle Iron Man on Sunday.  Kendle Koonsman (top) and Stacey Calder (#2 picture) gave it an all out blast to the finish line.  Stacey had the advantage with a great .035 light compared to Kendlle's .104.  Kendle got the win at the stripe, running a mere -.0034 under his dial with a 5.9766 on a 5.98.   Yes, that's a real 5.98 dial on what looks like a street bike.  Stacey probably got there first but broke out worse, running 6.17 under a 6.20. To get in the Iron Man round, Stacey had to get past Clint Lewis (#3 picture) in the Sunday bike final.  Both racers went red in that round and since Clint left first, and went red first, that gave Stacey the win.  Kendle earned his Iron Man spot with a win on Saturday against Bruce Sibert (bottom right). In the Saturday final round, Bruce had a better .056 light to Kendle's .108 but at the end it was Kendle closer to the dial at 6.11 on a 6.01.  Bruce was off dial also, running 6.38 over his 6.21.
Top Gunslinger- Sunday: Charlie Goff took the win in Top Gunslinger, cutting a great .003 light on the tree and driving 5.20 on a 5.17.  Philip Pennington of Three Rivers (not shown) was closer at 4.80 on a 4.78 but had some trouble on the start and was way behind at the finish line.
Modified Gunslinger - Sunday: The final in Sunday's Mod Gunslinger was a quick and close race all the way to the end. William Simpkins of San Angelo and Don Gowler of Winters were the last ones left in the class.  Both drivers started with nearly identical lights, Bill with a .025 and Don with a .028.  Nobody lifted here either and after the double breakout dust settled the scoreboards showed Bill at .0335 under 6.6065 on his 6.64 dial for the win. Don scored a bitty bit quicker .0374 under 5.8626 on a 5.90 dial.  5 second street bikes and 5 second foot brake cars?  The game is ON people.  Better step it up!
Top Gunslinger- Saturday: Kevin Bracey (top) took the win in Saturday's Top Gunslinger, but only just barely.  Carol Johnson was hot after him and would have taken the win except for that dad-gum breakout thing.  Kevin had a good round, going .020 on the tree and driving a 4.945 ion a 4.92 dial for the win.  Carol had the "light of the weekend" with near perfect .0004 but at the finish broke out by a tiny .0041, clocking 5.0059 on a 5.01 dial.  Inches and zeros!
Modified Gunslinger - Saturday: Jay Campbell (top) from Merkel took Saturday's Mod Gunslinger after Bobby Knox handed the round to him with a just pink -.0084 early start.  In what seems to be normal for these red light final rounds, Bobby's big ol' truck ran a perfect 6.809 on a 6.80 dial.  It just figures, doesn't it.
