12th Abilene Shootout update:
The Abilene Performance Car Association made their annual presentation of the shootout proceeds in November 2007 to the named charities of the event.  After all expenses were covered, The House That Kerry Built and the Boys & Girls Club of Abilene each received checks for $3350.  The APCA would like to thank all the event sponsors for their contributions to this community effort.  A big thanks goes out to all the racers that attended the event, making it one of the largest events of 2007.  APCA would especially like to thank Robert and Wynette Hudgins for their concerted effort to keep the track open during 2007 and making the race possible in the first place.  The combined efforts of these folks made possible a generous windfall for our local charities. 

Super Pro Winner: In Super Pro, we had $2500 and a Wally on the line at the finish.  Lonnie Alexander has been racing around these parts for quite a while, and has gone a lot of rounds.  But the last round of the 12th Abilene Shootout might be the best round yet.  Lonnie and Cory Beatty of Lamesa had the honor of being the last round of the Shootout and the last round of the 2007.  With everyone on the fence to watch, it was a double breakout I-ain't-lifting season ender.  Lonnie whacks the tree with a .010 light and runs to the stripe with a 6.364 on a 6.37 dial.   Cory hit a .056 light and ran a farther under 4.891 against his 4.90 dial.    And that's all, folks.

Super Pro Runner Up:  Cory Beatty - Lamesa

 

Pro Winner: The 12th Abilene Shootout awarded San Angelo's Benny Gossett another major award to put in the trophy case.  With a cash prize of $1000 and a Wally up for grabs, it was a rather anti-climatic final.  Chris Kelly of Merkel lost second gear during his semi final round but won due to a red light in the other lane.  The car still ran, but had no second gear under power.  With no means to give Benny a run for the money and the Wally, Chris conceded the win to Benny.  Benny still had to take the tree and  a "tennis shoe red light start" was used to make the win official. 

 

Pro Runner Up: Chris Kelly - Merkel

The Footbrake Final - car's broke, now he's afoot.

 

Jr. Dragster: Dustin Douglas of Abilene added another major award to his trophy shelf when he scored a victory in Sunday's 12th Shootout Jr. final.  Justin faced off against Kimie Lakey of Sylvester in the Jr final.  Is was over too quick, with Kimie going -.02 red on the start.  Dustin's 9.07 on a 9.10 dial and Kimie's 7.96 on a 7.93 became just a pair of time trials. 

 

Jr. Dragster Runner Up: Kimie Lakey - Sylvester

 

No Box Motorcycle:  It was an all Abilene final in Motorcycle No Box.  John Poor squared off against Clint Payne for the final round.  Clint gave it up with a just-a-bitty-red -.007 light.  It would have been a close race, as Clint ran it out to a 7.68 under his 7.70 dial.  John blasted to victory with a 5.97 on a 5.95 dial.  At 121 MPH. 

No Box Motorcycle Runner Up:  Clint Payne - Abilene

Street Trophy:  Rick Egbert of Abilene showed up with two cars, determined to get his best shot at winning something.  He got his win in the Trophy class over Joe Kennedy of Stephenville.  Rick went .031 on the tree and posted a 10.85 on a 10.77 dial to grab the win and the big trophy.  Joe missed the tree a bit and ran a 10.90 under his 10.92 dial trying to make up the difference.  Hey Rick - Where in the house are you going to put that floor lamp sized trophy?

Street Trophy Runner Up:  Joe Kennedy - Stephenville

Remember in prayer the family of Mike Womack, who lost his father this last week.  Also remember the family of Ryan Bard of Farmington, N.M., who lost his life in a racing accident at the Abilene Speedway on October 21.  While we enjoy the fun and fellowship that drag racing provides us, we are reminded there is a serious aspect to our sport
